Northern England XC Champs
« on: May 17, 2011, 03:15:20 PM »
The Allens girls ventured south of the border with a few other Scots to compete in Round 2 of the Nutcracker XC Series which doubled up as the north of England Champs. This was a chance to pre-ride the course where the British Champs will be held in July. The course was a mixture of grassy climbs and descents together with woodland singletrack on top of a very exposed windy hill!
An excellent race by both girls with Erika finishing 3.4 secs behind the winner and Katie keeping up with girls 2 years older!

292   Amira Mellor    Holme Valley Wheelers                            00:25:51.8
289   Erika Allen    Stirling Bike Club- Wallace Warriors  00:25:55.2 ;D
291   Eve Hanlon ColePeebles CC/Alpine Bikes                        00:27:14.1
293   Elena Melton    Wolfpax Riders                                       00:28:12.9
290   Emma Brady    MTS Inkland                                          00:29:41.1

The new kit looked good on the podium!

Superb effort.  "Podium" looks a little iffy though

Podium was a bit rocky!
Erika's face says it all - she was asked to go on podium but there were no prizes for 2nd or 3rd girl! >:(

Still she got a chance to show off new kit!

Prizes for top 3 boys!
All they said to the girls was that it was great to see so many of them! But not very encouraging to keep them in the sport if they aren't treated the same.

Absolutely agree.

British Cycling recognise on their website that cycling is a white male dominated sport.  In their commitment to making the sport more equitable, they identify a number of current actions that are being undertaken.  Of the 5 points noted, 3 relate to promoting female participation.  It seems like they're only "talking the talk".

Just saw this- not cool about the girls' prizes.

This will be a contentious suggestion but maybe we (the Club) could match the boys prize in future to encourage more girls?

A bit provocative that one, I know, but it would reward hard working racers and 'send a message' to organisers maybe?
