Firstly just to remind that Norrie needs a total of 9 volunteers, only 2 confirmed so far. Help out your club and the competitors, and enjoy watching some fast racers whizz past on bling whooshy carbon wheels!

Here is some press information that I will be sending out shortly.
--
Stirling Bike Club is looking forward to its second open event of the year, the Boomerang 2-Up Time Trial, which is raced by teams of two against the clock, and takes place on Sunday 6th May.

“The Boomerang” is so named because of the shape of the 22 mile course: from its start in Thornhill, the race heads past Flanders Moss towards the Kippen roundabout, passing the new Woodhouse Coffee Shop, turning left along the flat A811 to Stirling, taking heading in towards Kildean, before looping back to return to Thornhill.

Stirling Bike Club is delighted to have partnered with Richard Lamb, who has just opened the Woodhouse Cafe on the Kippen Roundabout, for this year’s event. Richard and his wife are keen cyclists themselves, having completed Lands End to John O’Groats in 2011 to celebrate their wedding anniversary. Since opening The Woodhouse in early April have been pleased to welcome many riders to enjoy coffee and cake. The café also serves soups, bacon rolls, sandwiches and pannini.  The building was completed to a sustainable brief, using entirely local craftsmen and incorporates oak from the site to blend into the natural woodland setting. The wood burning stove will ensure that it is a cosy, welcoming place to visit whatever the weather.

The event incorporates the Boomerang Trophy, which is awarded by Scottish Veterans Time Trial Association’s to any veteran over the age of 40 who records the best ‘age standard plus’ time – a handicapping system that allows veteran riders to compete on a level playing field. Last year’s Boomerang winner was Derek Stewart of Deeside Thistle Cycling Club, in a time of 57 minutes 06 seconds.

The fastest overall team were Steve Nutley and Joe Wilson  of Sandy Wallace Cycles, in 50:19.

44 teams took part in 2011, and Stirling BC is expecting another good field for 2012.

Just a note about why it is called the Boomerang- I got my facts a wee bit wrong. It is so named because the trophy itself is an actual Boomerang. Anyone got a picture of it? Will need to talk to the SVTTA secretary to find out more- I think there is an interesting backstory.

Thanks to he people who have recently volunteered to help Norrie on this one.

Norrie, apologies, I won't be able to commit to helping out on this one due to work.

If things change I'll let you know

Great pic from Lomond Roads CC, coming down the road just before the new Woodhouse Coffee Shop who are helping to sponsor the race.

If anyone gets any photos of riders going past the cafe, that would be brilliant by the way!

Up to date list for volunteers as follows:

Grant (marshall)
Andy Raff (marshall)
Jim Tierney (timekeep?)
Graham Newton (marshall)
Martin Lees, (sign on)
Katherine, (morning only)
Jon Sutherland (marshall)
Ian Binning (sign on and handicap guru  ;) )

I'm afraid Angela has other committments now and can't do the catering. I would be very grateful if anyone could take this task on? Kat has offered assistance, which is very kind, but is also riding and I don't want to burden entrants with juggling filled rolls!)

We still need a minimum of 4 more marshalls.

If you need help with catering I can make sandwiches and rolls and bring them with me so it saves time on the day and you can square me up - i'll give you receipts.

If you want to do that then let me know and how much/what you would like me to bring.

Grant,
Thanks very much, that is a very kind offer that I will gladly accept. I'll update you with numbers at the start of next week if that's ok? (Entry closes on Sunday night)

The volunteer list still stands as follows:

Grant (helping with catering)
Andy Raff (marshall)
Jim Tierney (marshall please Jim?)
Graham Newton (marshall)
Martin Lees, (sign on)
Katherine, (morning only)
Jon Sutherland (marshall)
Ian Binning (sign on and handicap guru   ;) )

We still need more marshalls folks, which is essential for the safe running of the event. A few hours out of your day to support the club and I'll ensure you have a free lunch bag too! PLEASE?

Folks,
Having been inundated with requests and questions about mixed sex teams and mixed club / unattached rider teams I have been in dialogue with SC and Janette Hazlett.
I can confirm that we can accept mixed teams of any description and they will be eligible for all the prizes appropriate to their category regardless of team composition.

WE STILL NEED VOLUNTEERS THOUGH!

Folks,

A reminder that entries close on Sunday night!

Whilst doing some research, I found the following text on the SVTTA website that makes the Boomerang clear:

BILL SMITH BOOMERANG TROPHY TWO UP TEAM TIME TRIAL

Bill was a member of the Douglas cycling club who emigrated to Australia where he
married and settled down. He came back on holiday frequently and rode time trials
here. On one visit he donated the Boomerang trophy to the S.V.T.T.A. in the early
seventies At that time all the names of the vets riding the event was placed in a hat
and when the names emerged that was your team. The format has changed over the years.
Bill was friendly with Pinky Williams and when Pinky went out to Australia to visit
his daughter, they used to meet up and with a bicycle supplied from Bills many racing
machines, Pinky and Bill put in a few miles together. Bill even promoted a time trial in
honour of Pinky, who didn’t let him down by taking third fastest place. On one such
cycle run, Bill let it be known to Pinky that in the event of his death he would like his
ashes scattered on Loch Lomond side. Unfortunately that day came to soon and Pinky,
keeping his promise, received Bill's ashes and organised a service on the loch side at
Balloch country park. Ian Walls came along with his church minister to take the
service. With a large group of S.V.T.T.A. members a service was held for Bill and his ashes put to the wind.

Another gentle reminder........... We still need volunteers to marshall and help Grant with the catering on the day.

The volunteer list for Sunday still stands as follows:

Grant (helping with catering)
Andy Raff (marshall)
Jim Tierney (marshall please Jim?)
Graham Newton (marshall)
Martin Lees, (sign on)
Katherine, (morning only)
Jon Sutherland (marshall)
Ian Binning (sign on and handicap guru)

Unless this changes, the event can't run. We need a very minimum of 9 marshalls. Again, I know it is a Sunday morning and we all have busy lifes, but you only get back what you put in folks. SBC has a big membership base and I am a bit disappointed that we can't muster up 9 marshalls from that for a few hours on Sunday!

Gonnae please gimme a hand?
