Where are they now????
« on: July 23, 2012, 09:37:06 PM »
In the spirit of the above tv programme I can answer the question....

Someone I know phoned to say that they had seen an apparition...who looked vaguely like a dapper cyclist they once knew (obviously now an aged 'Jakey'); wearing a pair of cycling tights, a merino wool top (much too small), a puffa jacket, an orange hat and a pair of dress shoes being ushered in to Johnston Bridge Service Station by his team of carers.

A sad end to a once marvellous cycling career!!

Yuuuuuup (does anyone else watch Staorage Wars) - I believe it was me and the Double D's - that is Donald and Dieter that found ourselves at a motorway service station - I have to trust El Champerinio Badgerinio where that was as I don't have a clue.

To cut a long story a little shorter than my norm, come 3.30am on Sunday morning, I found myself in a layby saying to my D's you've been a great support but the elastic is now burst.

As some (very close friends) will know and others will have an inkling, I have a peculiar bio-mechanical deficiency.  That is when pedalling my left knee kicks out.  It appears that up to 8hrs or so in the saddle is ok but thereafter I get an increasing niggle in my left Achilles and then I develop knee problems.

As the pain increased I took Ibuprofen (rapid release) and then another two and then another two and was starting to feel a bit 'funny'.  On top of trying to keep yourself hydrated and with the difficulty I have in taking solid food 10+ hrs in - the combination knocked me off a bit.

Anyways, I was helped into a change of clothing as described above other than I wasn't wearing cycling tights but a pair of Puffa style outdoorsie type trousers with my work shoes.

Not too long after the start of the drive back home I was feeling very sick so asked Donaldo if he could stop so I could assist myself in some self induced vomit propulsion.  After this I lay down at the side of the road to 'recover' and that is when my merino top got covered in grass etc etc and this is why I then had to wear the Puffa jacket on my walk through the car park to the service's toilets.

I fully accept that I did not look my bestest either facially or with my slightly obscure attire.  I do recall a woman in a car facing me as I was sitting in the front seat just staring at me and I'm sure just wondering ..........

In closing I just wish to thank my Double D's and say I will always keep you close to my heart.

I cherish my bicycle because it is an ever saddled horse which eats nothing

Dear Bibs, my commiserations entirely, having recently been on the saddle beyond 8/10 hrs strange things do indeed happen to you.
Felt sick continuously and was only able for a Mc Flurry after my exertions!
