Oban - Route suggestions
« on: May 28, 2012, 12:42:47 PM »
Will a free weekend ahead (woohoo) we are heading west (was going to be north to Aviemore, but it is a slightly dodgy forecast, so opting to brave the midges and go west) to Oban, or somewhere near.

Does anyone know of any good mtb routes in that area? We will have the pup with us, so routes need to be dog friendly (little road and slow, steep, techy is better than long and flat) about 20 - 30km ish.

Also if anyone else has a free weekend and wants to join us in a dog friendly, social pootle in that area then please drop me a pm and I'll let you know where we end up going.

Cheers

Jo

Hi Jo - if none of the regulars are getting back to you with routes, I can email the guys at our Oban Base to see if there are any MTB'ers among them that can suggest stuff.

cheers, A.

I was out last night chasing boys in the woods,  ::) but I'll have a rake through my guide books and folder of pull out maps from all the mags tonight.

I also seem to remember someone asking a similar question a year or so ago on Singletrackworld and getting a load of replies. It might be worth having a search on their forum.

"Ship?" he called. "Yup?" said the ship. "Do what I do." The ship thought about this for a few milliseconds and then, after double checking all the seals on its heavy-duty bulkheads, it began slowly, inexorably, in the hazy blaze of its lights, to sink to the lowest depths. -Douglas Adams

Hi Archie,

Thanks alot for the offer  :), but I've posted on three different MTB forums with no response, so thinking that it maybe isn't a great place for biking (or nobody likes me  ;) ).

We aren't tied to Oban, just wanted to go east, so I think that we will head down to Wanlockhead and explore the Southern Uplands Way / Lead Hills instead.

Anyone interseted in joining us?? Will be heading down Sat now, walking sat pm and biking Sunday...

EDIT: Just beaten by Beagy... I had posted on STW, but will search back anyway. Still think Lead Hills this weekend as the drive will be shorter too. Thanks Beagy.

Some thunks:
Have a look at Barcaldine Forest near Benderloch (just north of Oban).
That should suit your requirements - steep techy walks through forestry to the top of the local hill (Beinn Lora).

 :D
There was a massive orienteering festival last year in Oban - so there is plenty of woodland to explore.

Heading to Sanquhar on Sat aiming to ride out on Sunday morning to take in part of the Southern Upland Way to Wanlockhead and the Dempster Road route. Let us know if you fancy coming along - Dog friendly pace!
Cheers
