Glenrothes Cyclo-Cross 2002 |
 |
Organised by Fife Cycling 2000 the race was held at the premier
Fife venue within Riverside Park in Glenrothes.
The event was originally scheduled for the 24th November however, a clash with the Scottish Cyclo Cross championships meant a change of date and the race became round 1 of the Kinesis & Science in Sport sponsored Scottish League.
The course at Town Park is renowned for being fast and was made even faster by the dry and frosty conditions. The senior event started in sunny but cold conditions with Dan Whitehead leading after the first lap. Behind Dan the sorting out was taking place and he was soon joined at the front by Road man Tim Allan (Pro acto expressa) and last years winner Stephen Jackson (Glasgow MBC). The three riders started to open a gap on the rest of the field.
There was plenty action a short way back though, as the battle for 4th was building up with Jamie Moston (Brixton Cycles), James Melville, Alan Quinn and Stephen Couper all Glasgow Utd, Colin Shearer (Midlothian RT) and Paul Kelly (Glasgow Wheelers) all working hard to close the gap.
By the midway point both Colin Shearer and James Melville had punctured reducing the chasing bunch to 4 riders. At the front Whitehead opened up an unexpected gap as Jackson took an untimely trip into the bushes with Tim Allan being held back with him, the two riders chased and soon rejoined Whitehead.
With around 10 minutes remaining Whitehead hit the gas chased closely by Tim Allan as Jackson dropped his guard. Into the last lap Whitehead retained the lead to take the win in 1:05:35 It now looked like the chasing duo Allan and Jackson would hold their respective positions until Allan took an untimely off on the exit from a narrow bridge allowing Jackson through to cash in on second spot by a mere five seconds and 18 seconds down on Whitehead.
The race for 4th place was also on full throttle and saw Jamie Moston coming out on top of the Glasgow Utd pair of Alan Quinn and Stephen Couper while Paul Kelly finished just off the pace off the chasing bunch to take 7th.
The youth event, run on a shorter lap to the seniors, started at a blistering
pace with Kevin Barclay (Edinburgh Racers) carving up the small circuit to
finish the 20 minute + 1 lap race 2 laps up on his closest rival on the day
John Smith (Kennoway Road Club). Unattached rider Calum O'Brian took the
final Podium slot.
1st Veteran was Alistair Dow (Midlothian RT) in 10th place.
1st Junior was David Wardell (Sandy Wallace Cycles) in 17th place.
1st Lady was Mary-Rose Cross (Kingdom RT) in 29th place.
