Stirling Bike Club got the Scottish Cross League got off
to a flyer on Sunday at Plean Country Park near Stirling.
James
Melville (Glasgow United) set the early pace at the drop
of the flag before Stirling Rider Kenny Kentley (Velo-Ecosse)
took
the front as the riders hit the South Bing section of the
course. Kentley's lead was short lived on this, the first
round of the
league and incorporating the Mid-Scotland Championship
as Steven Jackson (Glasgow MTB) surged forward with last
years
League
winner Iain Nimmo (Merlin/RockLobster) stuck to his wheel.
With only 3/4 of the first 1.8 mile lap complete, things
were already shaping up for an exciting race as Nimmo’s
rear mech snapped leaving him the remainder of the lap
to run on
foot. Being the slowest part of the course Nimmo managed
to limit the damage to 1min as he entered the pits where
the Stirling
Bike Club Rider grabbed his back-up bike.
With 4 riders ahead
Nimmo worked his way back to the front over the next 2
laps to command the lead from Jackson and
Kentley in 3rd. Two laps to go saw Jackson Fail and leave
the door open to Kentley for the second spot. Stirling
Bike Club's Iain Nimmo crossed the line in 1h 3m 11sec (7
laps)
to take the win and the Mid Scotland Championship with
Kentley in 2nd at 2min 4sec. Jackson pulled up on the last
lap to
leave Steve Halsall (The Hub) to clinch 3rd at 4 min
41 sec.
Scottish XC Development rider Catherine Niblock (Rik's Bike
Shed) took the womans prize while Stephen Moffat of hosting
Stirling won the Juniors.
The Youth race was dominated by Edinburgh Racers riders,
with Andrew Whitehall taking the win from team-mate Kieron
McMahon, Jamie McQueen (unattached) came in 3rd.
