Fiery Cross 2001 Round 1 - Report

The first round of the Fiery Cross Kick Started the 2001 Scottish Cross League on Sunday. The preceding 24hrs of rain did little to dampen the spirits of the 35 riders who turned out to pit their wits against the toughest course in the series.

Gareth Montgommery (Raleigh) set the initial pace after other race favorites were caught up in a bottle neck. Montgommery's lead was short lived as the chasing bunch of Iain Nimmo (Merlin-Rocklobster) Frederick Morreston (SC Abiets) and Steve Jackson (GMBC/Alpine Bikes) upped the pace at the start of the second lap while Montgommery held on in 4th. By the 3rd Nimmo had pulled out a 15 second gap on Morriston and Jackson and steadily built on the gap to lap all but Montgommery who came strong around the half hour mark to claw back Jackson and overtake him to claim 2nd 4:56 down on Nimmo with Jackson unfortunate enough to be lapped 200yds from the finish line in 3rd.

6 races to go in the Scottish League, for full details checkout www.24-7mtb.com or www.stirlingbikeclub.org.uk
