GMBC Cyclo-Cross Race 28th October 2001
Mugdock Country Park

What a great turn out!! - After an extensive promotion drive which started with hundreds of leaflets being handed out and finished up with a brilliant 3/4 page article in the Saturday edition of the Glasgow Herald and a Radio Scotland Outdoor interview, we got the biggest turn out to a Cyclo Cross race for a very long time. The weather was really good and considering the huge amount of rain that has fallen the last few weeks the course held up pretty well over the loop of 0.85 of a mile.

We had 52 riders take to the starting line for the Men's race which included the Vets and started 1:30 minutes ahead of the Women,Junior and Youth riders who made up another 9 riders. With such a large field it was always going to be a bit of a squeeze at the first corner no matter how far into the race that was, but it was actually at the second corner that caught Jonathan McBain pushing too hard on his Cyclo Cross bike only to skid and fall, and after picking himself up he would always be struggling to make it back to the front.

The first lap saw Dan Whitehead (riding a Cross bike) from Aberdeen emerge just ahead of a pack which included Iain Nimmo and Gareth Montgomery, but by the 2nd lap Nimmo was out in front where he stayed until Fredric Morestin (also on a Cross bike) took the lead on the 5th lap and started to build up a lead which he was never going to give up.

The battle for 2nd heated up with Nimmo falling back to 3rd and Whitehead staying in front of him during the last three laps only for Nimmo to just pull a slight advantage in the last few hundred yards to claim 2nd by 3 seconds.

The Women's race was won by Sarah Gillam who is having a great season after declaring that she was not going to race quite so much this year, but has still managed to get a huge amount of podium placings!
