SCU MTB XC Round 7 - National Championships

A more steady start than the previous Scottish rounds made for a cagey race. Jonothan McBain (Midlothian RT) was left to lead out the first lap as the main contenders Iain Nimmo (Merlin/Rock Lobster), Craig Hardie of Hardie Bikes and Scott McRae (Sandy Wallace) waited on the vital move.

The first came from Hardie as he hit the gas going into one of the long singlerack sections opening up a mere 10 seconds on the chasing bunch. The gap was short lived as was the re-assembly which saw McRae and defending champion Nimmo break away to open up a 20 second gap with Race favourite and Scottish series winner James Frazer Moodie (Diamondback) homing in after a slow start.

It was the end of the second lap that saw Moodie make the decisive move, as Nimmo challenged the two rapidly opened up a gap on the chasing riders. The end of the third 6.5 mile (severely) physical lap saw Moodie 1:20 up on Nimmo and looking strong with Craig Hardie chasing hard 1:30 down on Nimmo. The 4th and final lap saw the positions unchanged with Moodie taking the win in 02:08:39 and Nimmo holding on for Silver at 02:11:47 Hardie placed third 5 minutes down while Bruce Mcleary (The Edge Lancaster) managed 4th which meant McBain had to settle for 5th. Scott Mcrae DNF'd with a twisted chain.
