Scottish Development Road Race Series
Dunfermline, 30th March 2003
Keiran Hay and Mark Ainsworth represented the club in the opening round of the Scottish Development Road Race Series at Dunfermline on 30th March 2003. The series is open to Juniors, 3rd and 4th category riders.
Keiran was the first rider to have a go on the first of the 10 laps, opening up a gap of about 200m before drifting back to the bunch. The race was skipping along at a fast pace on the undulating 5 mile circuit with the occassional rider trying to break from the bunch. With two laps to go the adventurous Derek Simpson from Falkirk opened up a gap of some 30 seconds on the bunch with an Edinburgh Bike Club rider following Derek out of the bunch.
Simpson managed to maintain the gap and took first place as the bunch all looked at each other wondering who was going to chase. With about 600m to go Keiran Hay sacrificed any chances of a place by giving his wheel to Mark Ainsworth. Keiran powered up the short drag before the final short sprint and with about 200m to go waved Ainsworth through. At this point 2nd ot 3rd place was a distinct possibility, however Ainsworth ran out of steam just before the top of the hill and was passed by the front of the bunch. Despite this Ainsworth still managed to grab some points in 14th position. He crossed the line dejected but defiant mumbling something about the quality of his lead out man! Keiran Hay crossed the line at the back of the bunch clearly still feeling the effects of a virus.
Both riders look forward to the next round and would be delighted to see other bike club members on the start sheet.
Keiran is competing in the forthcoming Grand Prix events.
