SBC Confined Time Trial Series 2018 - Results

So here we have the final results from this year’s SBC Confined TT series. It’s been an ‘interesting’ year for the organisers, with many roadwork disruptions, date changes, damp weather, a disqualification and possibly even a disgruntled dad (more of that later). I think it’s safe to say, that unlike last year (where it went down to the wire) it was quite easy to see who the series winners were likely to be early on, however the race for second place (and allocation of average points for marshalling duties) was certainly a ‘hot topic’ in the Barker household!

Points are allocated as: 10 points for 1st place, down to 1 point for 10th place. In the 2-up TT, 5 points are awarded to both first-placed riders. Points are allocated in each category: male senior, female senior, male junior (J) and female junior (J). For this series, juniors are U18 riders.

Despite all of the disruptions and bad weather, this year’s series attracted some more new riders (with many coming out of the woodwork for the Hilly TT) and in total we had 34 male seniors, 10 female seniors, 3 male juniors and our regular 2 tandem riders taking part. Disappointingly, yet again, we failed to attract any female junior riders, and we must work on this again for 2019.

With an average field of 20 riders in each of the individual rounds, it made all the hanging about in damp & draughty conditions worthwhile for the many helpers (timekeepers, marshals, number spotters & at times spectators) without whom we wouldn’t be able to run the series.

Although the Aero TT doesn’t form part of the series WRT points totals etc, it has to be said that the 11 riders taking part not only got the best weather of the whole series, they also witnessed the best scalping of the season when Sandy Holl beat his dad over the finish line by 9 seconds.

We’ve given summary results below with the full results & points tally for every round, and the overall points at the end of the series in an attachment (we're still working to get the table posted on the TT Results Page).

In the men's senior category Chris Pendlebury defended his 2017 title well, coming out at the top of the table with 33 points (I suspect Chris O’Hanlon may already be planning his diary for 2019). Dave Lindsay came away in 2nd place with 20 points due to the ‘average points for marshalling duties’ rule with Neil Barker (having never previously claimed a single point) having an amazing season and taking 3rd position with 19 points, after competing in all 4 rounds.

In the women’s senior category, Christina Mackenzie took maximum points in every race to take the title. As the only other female rider in the Hilly TT (despite a disappointing time) Rebecca Barker took advantage of the points on offer to finish the series joint 2nd place with Beth Clayton who only took average points for marshalling in the last round.

Cameron Kerr took part in three of the four series events to take the title with 28 points. Matthew Gallon put in a strong performance taking maximum points in the two events that he entered, leaving him in 2nd place with 20 points.

We hope you have all enjoyed the series and look forward to seeing you all again on the start line next April.

Becki (& Christine)

Apologies Fraser, don't know what happened there:

I'm available for marshalling if you require another body. I'm at the pictures (there's an old fashioned word!) until 6.30pm but I should make it to Thornhill for 7pm if I dash.

Hi Liz,

I'm sure the tandem guys can look after themselves B)

But if there are fewer than 25 riders the finish timekeepers should be able to assist as they won't be busy til about 7.30-7.35.

Failing that I am happy to swap places - I'm expecting to marshal the A81/A873 junction (bottom of the big braes descent where the riders turn back towards Thornhill).

Cheers

Dave

Round 4: Wednesday 15th August: Hilly TT - One lap of the Battle of the Braes finishing loop ( www.strava.com/segments/5218579 ). Starting at the bottom of the Mini Braes (B822) at Thornhill, up over the Mini-Braes towards Callander, left at the junction at the of the descent to climb the Big Braes (A81), left at the junction at the bottom of the Big Braes to take the A873 back to Thornhill. Race "HQ" will be the parking area in front of the Dykes farm machinery place as you leave Thornhill towards Aberfoyle. There is also plenty of parking down at the Woodhouse Cafe near the Kippen roundabout if you fancy a warm-up on the road from there to Thornhill.

As usual, we will be looking for volunteers as follows:

- A81/A873 Marshal:

- Finish timekeeper: Colin Chisholm
- Signage: Neil B

Please post up if you'd like to volunteer or ride. And fingers crossed it'll be a bit dryer than last year...

Happy to marshal the bottom of the big braes (A81/A873).

Mark - maybe you and Donald could ride as individuals, then we'd actually see how much quicker it is to have two people pedalling one bike

Please enter Me & Donald Maclean , on Tandem 🚀 . Obviously we should start Last ( of the seeded riders ) as Befits our status as last years winners and our 100% unbeaten record in club confined events 🧐 , it’s a very well organised and marshalled event so I’m flabbergasted as to why there’s such low numbers of competitors from a club of 400+ members 🤨. Last years ride was one of our most enjoyable - not just because of our win but because we gained our biggest scalp by catching for 1 minute Graeme Moore - the 4 times Scottish TT B.A.R champ and TT star 🌟 of the 1990s . Feel free to pipe in with the usual - Ohh there’s 2 of you on the one bike comments 😂 it will only show a lack of understanding of Tandeming 😤 . Under certain conditions they are faster but on a hilly course the Soloists should win especially against a pilot and stoker with a combined age of 110 long long years 😜 ( average 55 years ) 😁

Round 3: Wednesday 1st August – 10mi 2-Up TT - Results

Firstly, a huge thank you to all of our helpers who came out on a yet another very wet evening to brave the weather and support their Club and fellow riders (in particular the second-claimers who aren’t eligible to ride but still volunteer to help out).

On that note, unfortunately one of our teams has since been disqualified as one of them had let their membership lapse and was therefore not eligible to ride… let this be a warning to you all to ensure you keep your membership up to date (you will receive an email reminder when renewal is due).

Thanks to the 22 brave riders (especially those that were tackling the 2-Up for the first time), who still turned up despite the wet weather which we’ve grown unaccustomed to over the last couple of months. We hope that Emily has bounced back from her wee slide off a the Kippen roundabout and isn’t too sore today.

We trust you will have all dried off by now and can enjoy looking over the results. Apologies for the delay in posting, but as you will have guessed, there was some scrutineering required! We look forward to seeing another good turn-out for the Hilly TT on the 15th….

The race times are attached - any queries, give one of us a shout.

The course has been swept for roadworks, the signage is up and it looks like we're highly likely to get wet so don't forget your rear lights (as a minimum)!

We'll be at the Touch Road lay-by for sign on from 6.30pm.

Round 3: Wednesday, 1st August - 2 Up 10m TT

The next TT is the same 10m course as Round 2 but you need to find yourself a partner.

Start before the lay-by after Touch Rd junction, head out to Kippen roundabout and back to the start (well it’s just a little further than the starting point).

Come on folk, good practice for the Nationals where we hope to have 2 or even 3 ladies teams of 4 riders. Men's teams too I hope. I know of 10 ladies with TT bikes and a couple of young ladies who can manage clip on bars very well. And you can ride in the non-aero section if you like. Please support this and help us grow into a truly diverse club with a healthy TT element.
You've still got time to enter, by 8.00pm tonight!
Thanks Becki & Christine for putting this on.
